About

Goutam Saha, BTech, Ph.D. from IIT, Kharagpur had short Management Training at XLRI, Jamshedpur. During 1990-1994, he worked with Tata Steel. He joined the faculty of Electronics and Communication Engineering at IIT Kharagpur in 2002. In the 2006 fall semester, he served the University of Southern California, the USA as a 'Visiting Professor.' He was also with Trento University, Italy briefly as a 'Visiting Scientist'. He has given many invited lectures in India and abroad. His research interest includes analysis of heart, lung, neuro and speech signals with collaboration from India and abroad. He published papers in leading international journals & conference proceedings, co-authored two popular textbooks published by Tata McGraw-Hill, and filed several patents. His work was declared a winner in DST-Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Program, selected for the Rashtrapati Bhavan exhibition, became an editorial article of the peer-reviewed research journal, and was covered in leading media. His interview was aired in a weekly science program of German SWR2. His innovation features in India Innovates Youtube channel. He has served many administrative positions over the years. Currently, he is serving as Professor-in-Charge, Intellectual Property Rights & Industrial Relationship; Coordinator, Signals & Systems for Life Science; Resource person of National Service Scheme (NSS) and NSO Health & Fitness of IIT Kharagpur. At a national level, he is serving as an expert in healthcare technology-related committees and is coordinating activities of IMPRINT-India Healthcare Domain.

Research Statement

Our research team is now focussed on strengthening our lead in two application domains related to audio processing: (i)Use of speech for biometric authentication and development of a counter measure to prevent voice-based identity hacking; (ii)Development of heart and lung sound-based diagnostic tools for physician's aid. In neuro-signal processing, the team extends our work on how the brain works for complex cognitive tasks like perception, imagination, preference decision, etc. Going forward, we would like to explore how the integration of these three verticals opens up newer understanding and newer solutions. We also take up sub-problems leveraging our strengths in these to attend specific R & D needs. In each of the three areas of investigation, we have collaborating scientists, medical experts extending necessary support to our team.
